Alan Alda is an American actor, director, screenwriter, and author best known for playing Captain Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce on the television series M*A*S*H (1972–1983).

Born Alphonso Joseph D'Abruzzo in New York City on January 28, 1936, he began his career in the 1950s. His work, especially M*A*S*H, has been widely broadcast and recognized in Canada.

Early life and education

Alan Alda was born in New York City and is the son of actor Robert Alda. His birth name was Alphonso Joseph D'Abruzzo. He began acting in the 1950s, making his Broadway debut in 1959 and his film debut in 1963.

Career

Alda first gained recognition on stage and in film, then achieved major fame with M*A*S*H, where he starred as Hawkeye Pierce from 1972 to 1983. He won multiple Emmy Awards for his work on the series, including for acting, writing, and directing. He later appeared in films such as The Aviator and in television series including The West Wing. He also directed his first film, The Four Seasons, in 1981.

Alda received multiple Emmy Awards and numerous nominations for M*A*S*H, along with other major industry recognition. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for his role in The Aviator.

Other work

Beyond acting, Alda has written books, including Never Have Your Dog Stuffed and Other Things I've Learned. He taught at Stony Brook University as a visiting professor and co-founded the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science.
