Major works

Among Dumas's most famous works are "The Three Musketeers," "Twenty Years After," "The Count of Monte Cristo," and "The Black Tulip." He also produced a very large body of lesser-known fiction and drama; one source says his literary output reached more than 277 volumes.

Personal life and ancestry

Dumas was of mixed ancestry, and sources note that his paternal family background included a Black grandmother from Saint-Domingue (now Haiti). He experienced racism during his lifetime, according to modern biographical accounts.
