Ali MacGraw was born Elizabeth Alice MacGraw in Pound Ridge, New York, in 1939. She studied art history at Wellesley College before working in fashion magazines and modelling.

MacGraw entered acting in the late 1960s and quickly gained notice for *Goodbye, Columbus* (1969) and especially *Love Story* (1970), which made her internationally famous. She later appeared in films such as *The Getaway* (1972), *Convoy* (1978), and *Just Tell Me What You Want* (1980).
