Andreas Günter Lubitz was a German airline pilot who served as the first officer on Germanwings Flight 9525. On 24 March 2015, he deliberately crashed the Airbus A320 into the French Alps, killing himself and all 149 other people on board. The incident prompted international scrutiny of pilot mental health and cockpit security.

Early life and career

Andreas Lubitz was born on 18 December 1987 in Neuburg an der Donau, West Germany. He later trained as a pilot and worked for Germanwings, a Lufthansa subsidiary.

Germanwings Flight 9525

Lubitz was the first officer on the scheduled passenger flight from Barcelona to Düsseldorf. The aircraft crashed in the French Alps after descending during a period when the captain was unable to re-enter the cockpit.

Investigation and findings

French and German authorities concluded that Lubitz intentionally crashed the aircraft. The BEA final report stated that the plane was driven into the mountain through a deliberate and planned action.

Aftermath

The crash led to the deaths of 150 people including Lubitz. It also prompted renewed scrutiny of pilot mental health, cockpit access procedures, and airline safety oversight.
