Aqua formed in Copenhagen in the 1990s after earlier collaborations under the name Joyspeed. Sources disagree on the exact formation year, with dates including 1989, 1994 and 1996. The group rose to global prominence in 1997 with "Barbie Girl," then split in 2001 and later reunited in 2007.

Musical style and success

The band is known for upbeat dance-pop and Eurodance songs with a bright, playful style. Its debut album *Aquarium* made Aqua an international pop act and established its commercial peak. The group is also associated with bubblegum pop.
