Originally a fishing settlement known as Little Placentia, it became a major U.S. military base during the Second World War. Today, the site is used for port operations, ferry service, and industrial development.

History

Argentia began as a fishing community and was renamed from Little Placentia after silver was discovered nearby. Its history changed dramatically in 1941 when it became the site of a major U.S. military base, leading to the relocation of many residents.

Second World War significance

Argentia hosted a major Allied military installation during the war and afterward. The Atlantic Charter was agreed to offshore in 1941, giving the site lasting historical importance.

Current use

After the military base was abandoned, the site was developed into a commercial port and industrial park. It also serves as the terminal for a seasonal ferry service between Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.

Geography

Argentia lies on the southwest coast of the Avalon Peninsula in Placentia Bay. Its headland location creates a sheltered natural harbour, which has been important to its port function.
