Asim Munir is a Pakistani military officer who has served as Chief of the Army Staff of the Pakistan Army since November 2022. In May 2025 he was promoted to field marshal, and later in 2025 he was named Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces, a post that gives him oversight of the armed services.

Early life and education

Munir was reportedly born in 1968 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Sources describe him as a graduate of the Officers Training School at Mangla before joining the Pakistan Army.

Munir held senior intelligence and command posts, including director general of Military Intelligence and director general of the ISI. He later served as Quartermaster General before becoming army chief in November 2022.
