Early life

Audie Murphy was born in rural Texas and grew up in a poor sharecropping family. He left school early and later enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Murphy became famous for his combat record in Europe during World War II. He earned the Medal of Honor and numerous other decorations for acts of bravery, and is widely recognized as the most decorated U.S. combat soldier of the war.

Film career

After the war, Murphy entered Hollywood and acted mainly in westerns and war films. He portrayed himself in the 1955 film adaptation of his memoir, *To Hell and Back*, and appeared in more than 40 films overall.

Later life and death

Murphy later faced financial difficulties and pursued various business interests after retiring from acting. He died in a private plane crash near Roanoke, Virginia, in 1971 and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
