Brooks also holds a significant place in theatre education, having earned an MFA from Rutgers University.

Early life and education

Avery Brooks was born in Evansville, Indiana, and later grew up in Gary, Indiana. He studied at Livingston College and Rutgers University, where he became the first African American to earn an MFA in acting and directing from Rutgers.

Acting career

Brooks gained wide recognition for his role as Benjamin Sisko in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He also played Hawk in Spenser: For Hire and its spin-off A Man Called Hawk. His screen credits include films such as American History X and 15 Minutes.

Teaching and later work

Following his best-known television roles, Brooks largely stepped back from frequent screen acting. He spent much of his time teaching at Rutgers University and continuing artistic work such as recordings and convention appearances.
