Born on 31 January 1911 in Strumica, then part of the Ottoman Empire, Baba Vanga was originally named Vangeliya Pandeva Dimitrova. Accounts consistently describe her as having lost her sight in her teen years. She later became known under the name Vangeliya Gushterova after marriage.
