Early life and family background
Benjamin Lee Guinness was born in Dublin in 1798 into the Guinness brewing family. He was the third son of Arthur Guinness II and the grandson of Arthur Guinness, the brewery founder.
Brewing career
Guinness joined the family business early and later became sole proprietor after his father's death in 1855. Under his leadership, the brewery expanded into one of the largest and most profitable in the world. By the 1860s, Guinness stout was being exported widely across the British Empire and beyond.
Political career
He served as the first lord mayor of Dublin under the reformed corporation in 1851 and later sat in Parliament as a representative for Dublin City.
Philanthropy and legacy
Guinness used much of his wealth for public works, most famously helping restore St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. His success helped establish Guinness as a globally recognized brewing company. He was created a baronet in 1867.
