The Bernese Mountain Dog developed in Switzerland, with roots commonly linked to Roman mastiff-type dogs brought to the region more than 2,000 years ago. It became a versatile farm dog in the Bern area, especially valued for draft work and livestock management.

Appearance

The breed is a large, powerfully built dog with a long coat that is typically black with white and rust markings. Its distinctive colouring and broad frame make it one of the most recognizable Swiss mountain dogs.

Temperament

Bernese Mountain Dogs are generally described as calm, affectionate, and people-oriented. Modern breed profiles also note that they are often gentle family companions while retaining a working-dog background.

Health and lifespan

The breed has a relatively short average lifespan compared with many dog breeds, commonly cited at about 7–10 years. Breed references also note a tendency toward a life expectancy at the lower end of that range.
