Early life

Sigmund von Birken was born on 5 May 1626 in Wildstein near Eger in Bohemia. He came from a Protestant theological family, with his father serving as a pastor.

Career

Birken studied law and philosophy at the University of Jena but did not complete his studies. He later built a literary career in Nuremberg. In 1655, he was appointed imperial record keeper to Emperor Ferdinand III, a position that improved his social standing.

Literary work

Birken was a German Baroque writer best known for poetry and hymns. He helped revive the Pegnesischen Blumenorden, a literary society in Germany, and was involved in literary circles that promoted the German language.

Death and legacy

Birken died in Nuremberg on 12 June 1681 after suffering a stroke. He is remembered as an important figure in seventeenth-century German Baroque literature.
