Blades of the Guardians (Chinese: 镖人) is a Chinese wuxia comic created by Xu Xianzhe. Set during the late Sui dynasty, the story follows the bodyguard Dao Ma as he undertakes an escort mission through the Western Desert. The comic began serialization in 2015 and has been collected into multiple volumes, with film adaptations.

Creation and Serialization

Blades of the Guardians was created by Xu Xianzhe, who previously worked in advertising and literary translation. The comic began serialization on July 1, 2015, and was released simultaneously on multiple online platforms.

Story Setting

The comic is set during the turbulent late Sui dynasty, specifically around the year 607 AD (Daye 3). It blends historical atmosphere with fictional plotlines, taking place in the Western Desert, Chang'an, and the martial world.

Plot

The story follows Dao Ma as he accepts an escort mission while evading pursuers. He encounters various factions and conspiracies along the way. The narrative uses the escort as a thread to gradually reveal the larger political situation.

Adaptations

Blades of the Guardians has been adapted into animation, games, and a film. The film adaptation, titled Blades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert, was released in 2026. The adaptations continue the original wuxia setting of the late Sui dynasty.
