Bob Dole was an American politician, lawyer, and U.S. Army veteran who represented Kansas in Congress for more than three decades. He was a leading Republican figure, serving as Senate Majority Leader and as his party's nominee for vice president in 1976 and president in 1996. He died in 2021 at the age of 98.

Early life and military service

Bob Dole was born in Russell, Kansas, on July 22, 1923. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was seriously wounded in combat. He spent years recovering in military hospitals.

Congressional career

Dole represented Kansas in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1961 to 1969 and in the U.S. Senate from 1969 to 1996. He became Senate Republican Leader and served as Senate Majority Leader from 1985 to 1987 and again from 1995 to 1996. He also chaired the Republican National Committee from 1971 to 1973.

National political campaigns

In 1976, Dole was the Republican vice-presidential nominee, running alongside President Gerald Ford. In 1996, he became the Republican presidential nominee but lost the election to incumbent President Bill Clinton.

Later life and recognition

After leaving the Senate in 1996, Dole remained a prominent public figure. He received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2018. He died on December 5, 2021, at the age of 98.
