Geography

Bonaire is a relatively small Caribbean island with a dry climate and low-lying terrain. It measures roughly 40 km in length and about 11 km at its widest point, with a land area of about 288 km² excluding the uninhabited islet of Klein Bonaire off its west coast. The highest point is Mount Brandaris, approximately 240 m above sea level.

Bonaire is a special municipality of the Netherlands, forming part of the Caribbean Netherlands together with Saba and Sint Eustatius since 2010. Its capital is Kralendijk, and the official currency is the United States dollar.

Culture and language

Dutch and Papiamento are the official languages of Bonaire. The island’s culture reflects its Dutch Caribbean history and its ties to the wider Leeward Antilles. The population is approximately 21,745 as of a 2021 estimate.

Tourism and environment

Bonaire is especially known for coral reefs, shore diving, windsurfing, and birdwatching. Environmental protection is a key part of the island’s identity, particularly around the Bonaire National Marine Park, which safeguards its marine ecosystems.
