Early life and junior career

Brendan Shanahan was born in Toronto, Ontario, and developed as a hockey player in Ontario. He was drafted second overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft.

NHL playing career

Shanahan played 21 NHL seasons across five teams—New Jersey Devils, St. Louis Blues, Hartford Whalers, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers—and became known for combining scoring ability with a physical style. He finished with 656 goals, 698 assists, and 2,489 penalty minutes in the regular season.

International career

Shanahan represented Canada at major international tournaments. He won gold at the 1991 Canada Cup, the 1994 IIHF World Championship, and the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Executive career

After retiring in 2009, Shanahan moved into hockey administration. He later served as president and alternate governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs and worked in NHL player safety.
