Early life and education

Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr. was born in Montclair, New Jersey, on January 20, 1930. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and later earned a PhD in astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which helped establish his reputation as an expert in orbital rendezvous and docking.

NASA career

Aldrin was selected as part of NASA's third group of astronauts in 1963. He flew on Gemini 12 before being assigned to Apollo 11. During his NASA career, he helped develop techniques for spacecraft docking and rendezvous.

Apollo 11 lunar landing

As Apollo 11’s lunar module pilot, Aldrin landed on the Moon with Neil Armstrong in July 1969. He became the second person to set foot on the Moon and spent about two hours on the lunar surface during the extravehicular activity (EVA).
