Cam Neely is a Canadian former professional ice hockey right winger and current Boston Bruins executive. Born in Comox, British Columbia, he played in the National Hockey League from 1983 to 1996 for the Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2005.
Early life and junior career
Neely was born in Comox, British Columbia, and played minor hockey in Maple Ridge before moving to the Western Hockey League with the Portland Winter Hawks. His junior success helped establish him as a top NHL prospect.
NHL playing career
The Vancouver Canucks selected Neely ninth overall in the 1983 NHL Draft, and he played three seasons with the club before being traded to Boston in 1986. He became known as a physical, high-scoring power forward with the Bruins. He finished his NHL career with 395 goals and 694 points in 726 games.
Injuries and retirement
Neely’s career was shortened by serious hip injuries, and he retired in 1996 after 13 NHL seasons. His final years were limited by a degenerative hip condition, but he remained one of the league’s most productive scorers when healthy.
Post-playing career
After retiring, Neely remained involved with the Boston Bruins and eventually became team president. He also received major honours including induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2005. He currently serves as President and Alternate Governor of the Boston Bruins.
