Early life

Carole Ann Pope was born in Manchester, England, on 6 August 1950. She moved to Canada as a child and later became associated with Toronto’s music scene.

Rough Trade

Pope co-founded Rough Trade with Kevan Staples. The group gained prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s, known for theatrical performances and sexually charged songs. Their track "High School Confidential" became a Canadian Top 40 hit and a signature song. Pope combined hard-edged rock with explicit homoerotic and BDSM-themed lyrics.

Solo career and later work

After Rough Trade, Pope continued recording and performing as a solo artist. She also wrote an autobiography and contributed music to film and television.

Recognition and legacy

Pope has received three Juno Awards and a Genie Award. She is regarded as a pioneering figure in Canadian rock and queer music history, and is widely described as an influential queer and anti-establishment performer.
