It was Aardman’s first feature-length film and follows a group of chickens trying to escape an egg farm before they are turned into chicken pies. A sequel, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, was released in 2023.

Plot

The film follows Ginger and other chickens on Tweedy’s farm as they attempt repeated escapes. When a rooster named Rocky arrives, the hens see a possible way to freedom.

Production

Chicken Run was directed by Peter Lord and Nick Park and produced by Aardman in partnership with Pathé and DreamWorks Animation. It was the studio’s first feature-length film. The film uses stop-motion animation and was inspired in part by The Great Escape.

Release and reception

The film was released in 2000 and became a major stop-motion feature, later gaining the distinction of being one of Aardman’s best-known works. In North America, it was distributed by DreamWorks and became part of the wider international stop-motion animation market, familiar to Canadian audiences through theatrical release and later streaming availability. It later received a sequel, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, in 2023.

Legacy

Chicken Run helped establish Aardman as a major feature-film studio and remains an important title in stop-motion animation. Its success led to further expansion of the franchise.
