Chris Chelios is an American retired professional ice hockey defenceman who played 26 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and Atlanta Thrashers. He is widely regarded as one of the top American-born defencemen in league history.

Early life and amateur career

Chelios was born in Chicago, Illinois. He played college hockey at the University of Wisconsin, winning the NCAA Division I championship in 1983.

NHL career

Chelios was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the second round of the 1981 NHL Draft. He made his National Hockey League debut in the 1983–84 season and went on to play 1,651 regular-season games, an all-time record among American-born players. Over his career, he won three Stanley Cups and three Norris Trophies. He won his first Stanley Cup with the Canadiens in 1986. He also played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and Atlanta Thrashers.

International play

Chelios represented the United States in four Olympic Winter Games. He helped Team USA win a silver medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics.
