Early life and education

Powell was born in Harlem, New York City, on April 5, 1937, to Jamaican immigrant parents. He was raised in the South Bronx and attended the City College of New York, where he joined the Army through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC).

Military career

Over a 35-year career in the U.S. Army, Powell held a range of command and staff positions. He became chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1989, a role that included oversight during the 1991 Gulf War.

Secretary of State

Powell was appointed U.S. secretary of state by President George W. Bush in 2000. He was unanimously confirmed by the Senate and sworn in in January 2001, serving until January 2005.

Public legacy

Powell was a prominent figure in U.S. military and foreign policy and a widely recognized barrier-breaking public official. He received numerous military and civilian honours over his career.
