Commodus was a Roman emperor who ruled as co-emperor with his father Marcus Aurelius from 177 to 180 and as sole emperor from 180 until his death in 192.

Early life and accession

Commodus was born in Lanuvium in 161 CE and was raised in the imperial household as the son and heir of Marcus Aurelius. He became co-emperor in 177 CE, an unusually direct dynastic succession in Roman imperial history.

Reign as emperor

After becoming sole emperor in 180 CE, Commodus ruled for twelve years. Ancient and modern sources often describe his government as increasingly dominated by personal rule, court favourites, and political violence.

Public image and gladiatorial role

Commodus cultivated an image connected to Hercules and was unusually associated with arena combat. His participation in gladiatorial displays became one of the best-known features of his reign.

Death and legacy

Commodus was killed in a palace conspiracy on 31 December 192 CE. His death brought the Nerva–Antonine dynasty to an end and was followed by a period of renewed instability in the Roman Empire.
