Development
Concorde was created through an Anglo-French partnership under a treaty signed in 1962. The aircraft was manufactured by British Aircraft Corporation and Aérospatiale. The first prototype flew on 2 March 1969. A total of 20 Concorde airframes were built, including prototypes and production aircraft.
Design and performance
Concorde featured a slender fuselage, an ogival delta wing, and a droop nose to optimise high-speed flight while maintaining runway visibility. It was powered by four Rolls-Royce/Snecma Olympus 593 turbojets with reheat. The aircraft could cruise at Mach 2.02 and reach a maximum altitude of 60,000 ft (18,300 m). It was the first civil airliner to incorporate an analogue fly-by-wire flight-control system.
Service history
Concorde entered scheduled service on 21 January 1976. British Airways and Air France were the only airlines to operate the aircraft in regular passenger service. It primarily flew transatlantic routes, along with some other long-haul services. Operations continued until 2003, when the aircraft was retired.
Legacy
Concorde became an icon of aviation for proving that scheduled supersonic passenger travel was possible. It was the first supersonic passenger-carrying commercial aircraft. Surviving Concordes are preserved in museums and collections, and the type remains a major reference point in aviation history.
