Playing career

MacTavish played centre in the NHL from 1980 to 1997 after being drafted by the Boston Bruins in the 9th round, 153rd overall, of the 1978 NHL Entry Draft. He became known for his defensive role and for ending his career as the NHL’s last helmetless player.
