Born in Reșița, Romania, Chivu started his football career with hometown club CSM Reșița before moving to Universitatea Craiova and then Ajax.

Chivu established himself at Ajax before moving to Roma in 2003 for a reported fee of €18 million. He later joined Inter Milan in 2007, where he spent the remainder of his playing career until retiring in 2014.
