Early life and junior racing

Dan Wheldon was born in Emberton, Buckinghamshire, England, on 22 June 1978. He began karting at age eight and later moved to the United States to pursue open-wheel racing. He competed in the US F2000, Toyota Atlantic, and Indy Lights series, achieving success before advancing to the IndyCar Series.

IndyCar career

Wheldon joined the IndyCar Series in 2002 and was named Rookie of the Year in 2003. He won the series championship in 2005, collecting multiple race wins over his career.

Indianapolis 500 victories

Wheldon won the Indianapolis 500 for the first time in 2005. He won again in 2011, driving as a late replacement entry for Bryan Herta Autosport. He is one of the few British drivers to have won the race.

Death and legacy

Wheldon died on 16 October 2011 after a multi-car crash during the 2011 IndyCar season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He is widely regarded as one of the most successful British drivers in American open-wheel racing and is remembered as a major figure in modern IndyCar racing.
