David Ben-Gurion was a Zionist statesman and Israeli political leader who became the first prime minister of Israel. He was a central figure in the establishment of the state in 1948 and served two terms as prime minister, as well as minister of defence. He is widely regarded as one of the principal founders of modern Israel.

Early life and Zionist activism

Born in 1886 in Płońsk, then part of the Russian Empire, Ben-Gurion became active in Zionist politics and later moved to Ottoman Palestine in 1906. He rose through labour and Zionist institutions to become one of the most influential leaders of the Yishuv.

Role in the founding of Israel

Ben-Gurion helped lead the political process that ended in the declaration of Israel's independence on 14 May 1948. He was the first signatory of the declaration and became the new state's first prime minister.

Prime minister and defence minister

He served as prime minister in two periods, 1948–1953 and 1955–1963, and also held the defence portfolio. His leadership shaped Israel's early state institutions and security structure.

Later life and legacy
