He is best known for his long spell at Manchester City, where he won multiple domestic honours, and for his role in Spain’s 2008, 2010, and 2012 title-winning international teams. He retired from professional football in July 2023 following an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Early life and youth career

David Josué Jiménez Silva was born on 8 January 1986 in Arguineguín, Gran Canaria, Spain. He developed as a player in Valencia’s youth system, progressing through the club’s academy before making his senior debut.

Club career

Silva played for Valencia, Eibar, Celta Vigo, Manchester City, and Real Sociedad during his professional career. He spent 10 seasons at Manchester City from 2010 to 2020, becoming one of the club’s most decorated players. He won the Premier League four times with Manchester City, and also claimed two FA Cups, five EFL Cups, and two Community Shields with the club. Earlier in his career, he won the Copa del Rey with Valencia in 2008, and later won the same tournament with Real Sociedad in the 2019–20 season. Silva was forced to retire in July 2023 after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury during preseason training with Real Sociedad.

International career

Silva made his senior debut for Spain in 2006 and played an important role in one of the country’s most successful eras. He was part of the Spain teams that won the 2008 UEFA European Championship, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and UEFA Euro 2012.

Silva was widely regarded as a creative, technical midfielder known for his passing, vision, and ability to operate in central or wide attacking roles. He is considered one of the finest midfielders of his generation.
