He was one of the leading stars of Indian cinema for more than five decades and remained active until his death in 2011. Early life

Dev Anand was born Dharam Devdutt Pishorimal Anand on 26 September 1923 in Gurdaspur, Punjab, British India. He later studied at Government College, Lahore before moving into films.

Film career

He made his film debut as a lead actor in *Hum Ek Hain* (1946) and became one of the best-known leading men in Hindi cinema. His career included acting, writing, directing, and producing, spanning several decades and more than 100 films.

In 1949, he and his elder brother Chetan Anand co-founded Navketan Films. The company became associated with several notable Hindi-language films and helped shape his career as a producer.
