Nicknamed “The Dominator,” he played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, and Ottawa Senators, and won six Vezina Trophies and two Stanley Cups. He also led the Czech Republic to Olympic gold at the 1998 Nagano Winter Games.

Early life and career

Dominik Hašek was born on 29 January 1965 in Pardubice, Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic). He developed as a goaltender in Czechoslovakia before moving to the NHL in 1990. He began his professional career with HC Pardubice and later became known internationally for his unorthodox style and reflexes.

NHL career

Hašek played for four NHL teams across 18 seasons, most notably the Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings. He won six Vezina Trophies and two Hart Trophies as the league's most valuable player. He also won Stanley Cup championships with the Detroit Red Wings in 2002 and 2008. In 735 NHL regular-season games, he recorded 389 wins and 81 shutouts.

International play

Hašek played for Czechoslovakia and later the Czech Republic in major international tournaments. He represented Czechoslovakia at the 1988 Calgary Olympics. His best-known international achievement was helping the Czech Republic win gold at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano.

Legacy

Hašek is widely credited with helping popularize elite European goaltenders in the NHL. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014 and is frequently listed among the greatest goaltenders of all time.
