Eddie Bravo is an American Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor, podcaster, stand-up comedian, and musician. He is best known for founding 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu, developing the no-gi 10th Planet system, and creating the Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI) grappling competition and ruleset.

Early life and background

Eddie Bravo was born in California in 1970 and is identified in sources as originally named Edgar Cano before later using Bravo, his stepfather’s surname. He later became known in the Brazilian jiu-jitsu community for his unconventional approach to training and instruction.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu career

Bravo trained under Jean Jacques Machado and earned his black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in 2003. He gained major recognition after submitting Royler Gracie at the 2003 ADCC Championship.

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu

After his competitive breakthrough, Bravo founded 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu, a no-gi grappling system and team associated with unorthodox positions and submissions. The program became influential in grappling and mixed martial arts communities.

Eddie Bravo Invitational

Bravo also created the Eddie Bravo Invitational, a grappling tournament series with its own ruleset. EBI became one of his best-known projects outside instruction and gym ownership.
