History

The English Mastiff is an ancient British breed with roots often linked to old mastiff-type dogs and later 19th-century breeding influence. It has been used as a guard, estate, and fighting dog over many centuries. The breed experienced a severe population decline during the early 1900s but was rebuilt by dedicated breeders.

Appearance

The breed is distinguished by its enormous frame, broad head, short sleek coat, and dark or black mask on the muzzle and face. Common coat colours include fawn, apricot, and brindle. Adults are roughly 27.5–31 inches (69–79 cm) at the shoulder and weigh about 120–230 pounds (54–104 kg), with males typically larger than females.

Temperament

The English Mastiff is widely described as calm, gentle, affectionate, loyal, and protective. Despite its imposing size and guarding background, it is commonly presented as a family-oriented companion. The breed is often noted for its gentle nature and strong bond with its household.

Health and lifespan

The breed’s typical lifespan is often given as about 6 to 12 years. As a giant breed, it is susceptible to weight- and joint-related conditions such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus). Veterinary care tailored to large dogs is commonly recommended.
