Ernest Arthur Coombs was born in Lewiston, Maine, on November 26, 1927. Before his television career in Canada, he worked in children's entertainment. He came to Canada in 1963 to work with Fred Rogers on a CBC children's program.

Mr. Dressup

Coombs first gained attention through the CBC program *Butternut Square*. In 1967, he launched *Mr. Dressup*, where he addressed children directly and used puppets, crafts, and imaginative play. The show became a long-running fixture on CBC, airing until 1996. His television persona was built around costumes, puppets, and the Tickle Trunk.

Recognition and honours

Coombs received several awards for his contribution to children's television, including the Earle Grey Award and recognition from children's and charitable organizations. In 1996, he was appointed to the Order of Canada.

Death and legacy

Ernie Coombs died in Toronto on September 18, 2001, after suffering a stroke. He is widely remembered as a major figure in Canadian children's broadcasting and a cultural icon for several generations of viewers.
