History

Espanola was established in 1899 by the Spanish River Pulp and Paper Company as a company town. The community later incorporated as a town in 1958, after the town site and surrounding development were unified.

Geography

The town is situated on the Spanish River in Northern Ontario, west of Sudbury and south of Highway 17. Its location places it within the broader Sudbury District and near regional transportation routes.

Ringette heritage

Espanola is associated with the early development of ringette, a sport whose first experimental rules were created there in 1963 by Mirl Arthur “Red” McCarthy with local high school girls. The town is often identified as one of the sport’s historical homes.

Historically, Espanola’s growth was tied to the pulp-and-paper industry and forestry. Today it serves as a small regional centre with services for residents and nearby communities.
