Development

The Eurofighter programme began in the 1980s as a multinational European effort to develop a new combat aircraft. The design entered service in the early 2000s after a long development and production process involving partner nations and industry consortia.

Design and performance

The Typhoon uses a canard-delta layout, relaxed stability, and fly-by-wire flight control to achieve high manoeuvrability. Its twin EJ200 engines give it supersonic performance and a maximum speed commonly cited around Mach 2.35 at altitude.

Operational use

Although initially intended as an air-superiority fighter, the Typhoon has been adapted for multirole operations including air defence and strike missions. It is in service with multiple air forces in Europe and the Middle East.

Variants and production

The aircraft is produced in single-seat and two-seat versions and has been built in different tranches and national configurations. Production has continued for export and upgrades across the fleet.
