Early life

Magellan was born around 1480 in Portugal. Sources give either Sabrosa or Porto as his birthplace. He served Portugal before later entering Spanish service.

The circumnavigation voyage

In 1519, Magellan departed from Spain with a fleet seeking a western route to the Spice Islands. The expedition sailed around the southern tip of South America, discovering the strait now called the Strait of Magellan. The fleet then became the first European expedition to cross the Pacific Ocean.

Death in the Philippines

Magellan was killed on 27 April 1521 during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines. After his death, the voyage continued under other commanders and was completed by Juan Sebastián de Elcano in 1522, achieving the first circumnavigation of the Earth.

Legacy

Magellan is remembered for linking the Atlantic and Pacific routes and for helping demonstrate the scale of the Earth through global circumnavigation. The Strait of Magellan and the Pacific Ocean names associated with his voyage remain part of geographic history. His expedition also contributed to European exploration that later affected the northwest coast of North America, including Canada.
