Early life and education

Francine Ruel was born in Quebec City on 14 April 1948. She studied at the Conservatoire d'art dramatique de Québec from 1966 to 1969. Sources note that her writing career began after a period of travel in Europe.

Acting career

Ruel built a long career in Quebec television, film, and theatre. She is especially associated with the television series Scoop, for which she received a Prix Gémeaux for Best Supporting Performance in 1993. Her film credits include Gabrielle Roy, Aurore, and Monsieur Lazhar.

Writing career

Alongside acting, Ruel has written novels, children’s books, theatre, television material, sketches, and songs. Her children’s novel Mon père et moi was nominated for the Governor General’s Award and the Mr. Christie’s Book Award. She has published multiple works for young readers and general audiences.
