George A. Romero was an American-Canadian film director, writer, editor and producer best known for shaping the modern zombie film. His 1968 film *Night of the Living Dead* became highly influential, and later films such as *Dawn of the Dead* and *Day of the Dead* cemented his reputation in horror cinema.

Early life and education

George A. Romero was born in New York City in 1940 and later studied at Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. He began making short films and worked on commercial and industrial productions before moving into feature filmmaking.

Breakthrough with horror cinema

Romero’s first feature, *Night of the Living Dead*, established his reputation and became a landmark independent horror film. Its success led to a series of influential horror films that helped define the modern zombie subgenre.

Later career
