Early life and rise

George Best was born in Belfast and showed exceptional football ability at a young age. He was scouted for Manchester United as a teenager and quickly advanced into the first team. Best joined Manchester United after being scouted in Belfast and made his first-team debut at age 17, spending 11 years with the club.

Manchester United career

Best spent the peak of his club career at Manchester United, where he became a key attacker and part of the club’s famous forward line with Bobby Charlton and Denis Law. He scored 179 goals in 470 appearances for Manchester United according to one major source; another source gives 178 goals in 466 career games for the club. He helped Manchester United win the European Cup in 1968 and two league titles. He also won the Ballon d'Or, described as European Footballer of the Year, in 1968.

International career

Best represented Northern Ireland at senior level and earned 37 caps, scoring 9 goals. Although highly regarded individually, he did not lead Northern Ireland to a World Cup appearance.
