Early life and coaching career

Graham James was born on February 7, 1952, and became involved in junior hockey as a coach and scout. He coached or was associated with teams including the Moose Jaw Warriors, Swift Current Broncos and Calgary Hitmen.

Criminal cases

James was first charged in 1996 after complaints from Sheldon Kennedy and another player. In 1997, he pleaded guilty to sexual assault involving two underage players. He later pleaded guilty in a separate case involving Theo Fleury and Todd Holt. In 2024, CBC reported allegations that James abused a Winnipeg boy while working as a substitute teacher in the early 1980s; those allegations were denied by James and later dismissed in civil court.

Sentencing and parole

James received a 3.5-year prison sentence in 1997 for the first case. In the later case involving Fleury and Holt, he received a two-year sentence that was increased on appeal to five years. The Canadian Hockey Association banned him for life from coaching in 1997. He was granted full parole in 2016.
