Hatzegopteryx is a genus of giant azhdarchid pterosaur from the Late Cretaceous of what is now Transylvania, Romania. It is known from fragmentary fossil remains and currently includes one named species, Hatzegopteryx thambema. It was among the largest pterosaurs known, with estimates suggesting a wingspan of roughly 10 to 12 metres.

Discovery and naming

Hatzegopteryx was described in 2002 from fragmentary remains found in the Densuș-Ciula Formation of Transylvania. The genus name refers to the Hațeg Basin, and the species name is Hatzegopteryx thambema.

Classification

Hatzegopteryx belongs to Azhdarchidae, a family of pterosaurs known for very large size and long necks. It is not a dinosaur, but a flying reptile from the same broad Mesozoic era.

Reconstruction is based on limited fossils, but Hatzegopteryx is estimated to have had a wingspan of around 10 to 12 metres. Published descriptions also indicate an unusually robust skull and neck compared with some related azhdarchids.
