Set in a post-apocalyptic Japan, the story interweaves two narratives: the journey of Maru and Kiruko across the outside world, and the lives of children in a facility called 'Heaven.' The manga began serialization in January 2018 and has been adapted into an anime television series by Production I.G, which aired in 2023.

Premise

Heavenly Delusion is set in a world devastated by an unspecified disaster. The story alternates between two parallel narratives: one follows travelers Maru and Kiruko as they search for a place called 'Heaven,' while the other follows a group of children living in an apparently protected institution also referred to as 'Heaven.'

Publication

The manga began serialization in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon in January 2018. As of February 2026, it had been collected into 13 tankōbon volumes. By July 2025, the manga had more than two million copies in circulation.

Anime adaptation

An anime television series adaptation by Production I.G aired from April to June 2023. The 13-episode adaptation expanded the series' audience beyond the original manga readership.

Themes

The series has been described as exploring gender, natural disasters, tragedy, and the consequences of a collapsed civilization. Its structure combines mystery, science fiction, and survival elements.
