Heliopolis

Heliopolis was one of the oldest and most important cities of ancient Egypt, known in Greek as the “City of the Sun.” It was a major religious centre devoted especially to the sun god Re, and later to Atum-Re, rather than a major political capital.

History

Heliopolis was occupied from prehistoric times and rose to major prominence during the Old and Middle Kingdoms. Ancient sources and later scholarship describe it as a long-lived religious and intellectual centre.

Religion and cult

The city was closely associated with solar theology and the worship of Re, later linked with Atum-Re. Its priesthood was influential, especially when sun worship became closely tied to royal ideology.

Archaeology and remains

Most of the ancient city has been lost to quarrying, reuse of building stone, and later urban development. Only limited remains survive, including the obelisk of Senusret I and scattered archaeological traces.

Modern location

The ancient site lay in the northeastern area of present-day Cairo, especially around Ain Shams and El-Matariya. Modern Heliopolis, a separate planned suburb, was later named after the ancient city.
