Early life and accession

Henry VIII was born at Greenwich in 1491 and became king in 1509 after the death of his father, Henry VII. He had originally been the second son, but became heir after the death of his elder brother, Arthur.

Henry's desire for an annulment from Catherine of Aragon helped trigger England's break from the papacy. Parliament declared him supreme head of the Church of England, beginning the English Reformation.
