Travels

He left home in 1325, first undertaking a pilgrimage to Mecca, and then continued travelling for nearly three decades. His journeys reached across North and West Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, China, and parts of Europe.

Riḥlah

Ibn Battuta’s travels were recorded in the Riḥlah, a celebrated travel account dictating his experiences and observations. The work is valued for its geographical, political, and cultural details about the medieval world.

Historical significance

He is widely regarded as one of the greatest medieval travelers. His account remains an important source for historians studying the Islamic world and interregional contact in the 14th century.
