Turner was born Izear Luster Turner Jr. in Clarksdale, Mississippi, in 1931. He became active in music in the 1950s, leading the Kings of Rhythm and contributing to the early development of rock and roll and rhythm and blues. He is associated with the recording of "Rocket 88," a song often cited as one of the first rock and roll records.

Ike & Tina Turner

Turner met Anna Mae Bullock, later known as Tina Turner, in 1956 and helped shape her stage persona. They formed the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, which became one of the best-known live acts of the 1960s and 1970s. The duo produced major hits including "A Fool in Love" and "Proud Mary," for which they won a Grammy Award in 1971. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1978 after years of reported abuse.
