Inspector Gadget is an animated television series that began in 1983 and launched a broader media franchise. It centres on a bumbling cyborg police inspector who, with help from his niece Penny and her dog Brain, tries to stop the criminal organisation M.A.D. led by Dr. Claw. The original series ran for 86 episodes over two seasons and became one of DIC Entertainment's best-known properties.

Premise

The series follows Inspector Gadget, a well-meaning but inept cyborg detective who is sent on missions against M.A.D. Although he is the official hero, Penny and Brain usually solve the cases behind the scenes.

Production and broadcast

Inspector Gadget was created by Andy Heyward, Jean Chalopin, and Bruno Bianchi, and was produced by DIC Audiovisuel and Lexington Broadcast Services Company. It was the first cartoon syndicated by DIC and originally aired from 1983 to 1985.

Franchise expansion

The success of the original series led to later spin-offs and adaptations, including additional animated series, films, and games. The character also appeared in a 1999 live-action film adaptation.

Cultural impact

Inspector Gadget became one of DIC’s best-known properties and the title character served as a mascot for the company. The franchise has remained recognisable through revivals and reboots over several decades.
