Inuyasha was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday from November 1996 to June 2008. The manga was published in 56 collected tankōbon volumes.

Anime adaptation

The manga was adapted into an anime television series by Sunrise. The main anime adaptation aired from 2000 to 2004, with a sequel series later continuing the story.

Themes and setting

The series blends fantasy, comedy, drama, and romance with Japanese folklore. Much of the story takes place in a fictionalized Sengoku-era Japan, with occasional links to modern Tokyo. The series draws comparisons to modern fantasy series like Frieren: Beyond Journey's End and the classic Howl's Moving Castle.
